Reasons Causing Water Pollution And What Can Be Done To Reduce It?

With each passing second, water bodies all around the world are getting polluted. Waste products directly thrown into the water or the harmful bacteria contaminating it can be considered as huge causes of water pollution. It has become one of the most severe problems faced by the world now-a-days. Many stringent steps like investing in Environmental protection equipment are initiated by the government. For us to take some actions on our part, we first have to get familiar with all the causes of water pollution.

Causes of water pollution

  • Rapid Urban development- With the growing of the industries, the environmental balance is being disrupted at huge paces. People began building big houses, roads and industries and stated flushing down chemicals down the water bodies. Not just the factories, but even the ordinary people are responsible for increasing the water pollution. They throw the domestic waste down the water bodies, wash clothes and even take bath in them. This tends to spoil the quality of the water, leading to pollution.
  • Toxic chemicals and fertilizers- The use of fertilizers has been more prevalent now-a-days than ever. To cope up with the demands of growing populations, farmers are forced to use chemical fertilizers which may lead to algal bloom in water. Extinction of underwater plants is inevitable due to increase in oxygen levels.
  • Oil spills-  It has been repeatedly observed that around 70% of the oil in water is due to human activities and around 12% of them is due to tanker accidents. Oil spills are known to be destructive because they release large amounts of oil at once. This may be extremely intoxicating for aquatic animals.

You as a responsible citizen must understand the severity of the situation. Not only water pollution is harmful for the aquatic animals and the environment, it has a fatal effect on human being as well.  So, you should be more responsible when it comes to protecting the environment.
